Van Buren County Farmland and Open Space Preservation
Van Buren County has partnered with the Van Buren Conservation District to provide support to the Van Buren County Land Preservation Board. We believe that this partnership will greatly strengthen the growing Purchase of Development Rights program in Van Buren County.

How Does Selling Development Rights Protect Farmland? If a landowner sells his/her development rights to the County, then the County owns the right to develop the land. However, the County is not able to exercise the right because the property owner still owns the land itself. The only way the land can ever be developed is if the County sells the development rights back to the person who owns the land. Because the intent of the VBC Farmland and Open Space Preservation Ordinance (FOSPO) is to permanently preserve farmland, it is very difficult to ever develop land once the development rights are sold.

2008 Native Plant Sale!
What Are Native Plants? Michigan's Native plants are the trees, shrubs, wildflowers, grasses, ferns and other plants which were present before European settlement. Because the native plants of Michigan have evolved with our unique climate and soils, they are often times better adapted to our local conditions than their non native or cultivated counterparts. Native plants also play an important role in the life cycle of many different species of wildlife including many butterflies, song birds and mammals.
